Playing With Paintsticks

Teacher: Pam Gantz
Class Fee: $45
Class Length: 6 Hrs.
Level: Beginner

Paintstiks, an oil-based paint product, are a great addition to your quilting tools whether you are a traditional quilter or like making art quilts. Have you purchased some at a show and when you got home wondered how to use them? In this class you will explore various ways to use Paintstiks on fabric. This is a fun new way to use stenciling, rubbings and direct application to create your own fabric or to enhance an existing project.

This is a technique class. Students will have the opportunity to create their own stencil design and will be able to use the knowledge gained to create their own project using this versatile product. There are several projects on display at Batiks Galore that were created using Skiva Paintstiks.

Supplies:

  • Design Magic book by Shelly Stokes.*
  • Several colors of Paintstiks.*
  • Fat quarter of fabric that reads like a solid. Lighter colors of fabrics like 1895’s work best. This must be prewashed to remove the sizing.*
  • 4-6 sheets of black or dark paper.
  • 1-2 feet of freezer paper.
  • Small sharp scissors (paper scissors).
  • Exacto knife with new blade.
  • 6”x 12” rotary cutting ruler.
  • Rotary cutting matt and rotary cutter.
  • Pencils for use on white and dark paper. (The silver fabric marking pens work well for this.)

* These items are available at Batiks Galore.

Seasonal Table Runner

Seasonal Table Runner

Teacher: Pam Gantz
Class Fee: $75
Class Length: 2 – 6 Hrs.
Class Level: Beginner to Advanced

Have you ever wondered how quilters get those sharp points? Have you seen a paper foundation pieced pattern but weren’t sure how to do this technique? We will use foundation paper piecing to create a table runner using Judy Niemeyer’s “Seasonal Table Runner Pattern.” You will learn how to organize your materials to simplify and speed up the sewing process. This is a great pattern and contains enough foundation papers to complete two runners. Once you do one of these, you will be hooked.

Supplies:

  • Sewing machine in good working order.1
  • “Seasonal Table Runner” pattern by Judy Niemeyer*
  • 1½ yard background fabric.*
  • ¾ yard fabric for your outer border.*
  • ½ yard each of 5 different fabrics for your spikes and geese or you can use 1 ½ yard of a single fabric.*
  • Thread to coordinate with your fabric.
  • Small binder clips.*
  • A 12” add a quarter ruler.*
  • Size 70 sewing machine needles.
  • Cutting matt.
  • 60mm rotary cutter.
  • Purple Thang* or stiletto.
  • Flat flower-head pins.*
  • Several gallon zip lock bags.

Please do the following steps before coming to class:

  1. Cut your fabrics according to the pattern directions but do not sub cut the fabric using the fabric layout sheets. We will do that step in class. If you have not used a Judy Niemeyer pattern before, let us know when you purchase your pattern and we will show you how to prepare your paper foundation pieces.
  2. Use the binder clips to clip your foundation pieces, template layout sheets and coordinating fabric pieces together and place each section in its own plastic zip lock bag.

Doing this preparation will enable us to begin sewing in the first class as soon as we finish sub cutting your fabrics using the fabric layout sheets.

In the first session we will talk about how to piece each of the foundations. If you don’t finish the foundations in class, you will need to finish them at home. In the second session we will sew the pieces together and discuss how to bind the curved edges.

1 Since I am not familiar with all types of machines, please take time to make sure that your machine is in good working order before coming to class.

Oval Fabric Wrapped Bowl with Lidfabric bowl 1

Teacher: Pam Gantz
Class Fee: $45
Class Length: 6 Hrs.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate

Students in this class should have already made a fabric wrapped bowl. We will work on the techniques required to create an oval bowl using fabric strips and cotton clothesline. We will discuss the technique for making this shape and how to construct a lid. Various embellishments will be discussed. Each student will work on their own bowl during class. Finishing techniques will be demonstrated at the end of class.

Supplies:

  • It’s a Wrap book by Susan Breier.*
  • Sewing machine in good working order that can do a zigzag stitch.1
  • 50 Ft. of cotton clothesline (the nylon clothesline does not work).*
  • ½ to ¾ yard of cotton fabric. Read page 7 for fabric suggestions. Please cut the fabric in ½” to ¾” strips (I found that 5/8” strips seem the easiest to work with). Fat quarters are great for this since you don’t want to work with strips longer that 15-20”.*
  • Thread to coordinate with your fabric or you can use monofilament if you are comfortable with this type of thread. You will also need a coordinating color thread for use in the bobbin.
  • 1-2 glue sticks for fabric. I use the 3M type that starts blue and dries clear. The ½ diameter stick work best.*
  • A paper plate or piece of 8 ½ x 11 in paper or a piece of freezer paper for your gluing work surface.

1 Since I am not familiar with all types of machines, please take time to make sure that your machine is in good working order before coming to class.

    Additional Teachers

    Fran Snay

I will be happy to teach classes for Retreat Groups.
6-Hour classes @ $15.00 per student. Please contact me ahead of time for more information via email or my phone number: 817-295-4649/cell 817-821-5639

I will do evenings or mornings. Just let me know what fits your group. My favorite among students is my variation of String Quilts. This is not your "old fashioned" string quilts. You will be able to leave the retreat with all the information you need to complete your quilt. It is so much fun, fun, fun, and so easy.

Fran Snay has been teaching the art of quilting since 1989 to a wide range of students; from beginners to advanced quilters. She spends much of her time encouraging new quilters, and teaching them "color combinations" to more effectively present their quilt creations as a work of art.
Her quilts have been ribbon winners in the Texas State Fair, and she has had quilts accepted for display in the International Quilt Show in Houston, Texas. Fran also served on the Teaching Faculty for the 2003 International Festival in Houston. She also teaches quilting for the Burleson Independent School District's Continuing Education Department. Her love for quilting has placed her in major leadership roles in several quilting guilds, from Vice President/Programs to President. Each assignment was eagerly accepted by Fran with the same dedication that she has whenever she undertakes a new quilt design. Her love for quilting, and her desire to share this talent with everyone that she can is truly God inspired, and reflects the highest credit on her and this art. Her' quilts have won numerous Blue Ribbon awards over the years, and her quilts have been featured in most of the national quilt magazines over the past four years, including the June 2005 issue of Quilters Newsletter Magazine.

Because of her love for quilting, Fran founded the "JOHNSON COUNTY QUILTING GUILD" which meets on the fourth Monday of each month. After many hours of hard work and planning, the JCQG had it's first meeting in September of 1998. Under Fran's guidance, the guild has grown to a membership of sixty-five dedicated quilters, and is still growing. Fran has also initiated many of the charity work projects for Texas CPS, and babies in two local hospitals, and Nursing Homes; and does Volunteer work at a local hospital in the Burleson area.

Fran also organized a "quilting bee" group which is known as the "Determined Bees". For the past eight years, the group has been meeting at Fran's house on the third Wednesday of each month.

In addition to being founder of the Johnson County Quilt Guild, and the Determined Bees, Fran recently organized a TAS Chapter known as the "Wee Bee" Appliqué-ers. Fran also teaches quilting for the Burleson Community Educations classes at one of the local Middle Schools. Fran is "retired" and now devotes her time to teaching and preserving the art of quilting. She lives in Burleson, Texas with her husband Chuck. They have five children, seven grand-children, and one "great Grand-daughter".

In addition to teaching, Fran also travels doing a small "trunk shows/lectures", worksohops for groups, churches, schools, retreats, and many other organizations. If you are interested in having her visit your group, you may contact her through her email below.
